Sites of interest:


Swellendam Heritage, culture, architecture, wildlife and outdoor adventure are just some of the attractions of Swellendam. Located at the foot of the Langenberg Mountains and halfway between Cape Town and George, Swellendam is the third oldest permanent settlement in South Africa. The town-centre of Swellendam has much to offer: lovely old buildings, excellent restaurants, shops, and arts & craft projects.

Rare species of flora and fauna surrounding the Breede river. Cape Mountain Zebra, grey Rhebok and beautiful bird life. A walk along the wide flowing tranquil river is recommended.

Sports Facilities in the area:

Golf players will appreciate the 9-hole golf course in Swellendam with its inspiring view of the Langeberg. The greenfees are low, and this course is obviously much less busy than Cape Town courses.. Although only 9 holes this is an extremely good course and visitors are welcome.

Canoe on the beautiful Breede river. Tennis, squash, bowls, horse riding and mountain biking are available nearby.

Marloth Nature Reserve:

Extending from the edge of the the town to the top of the majestic Langeberg mountains. With beautiful walks to waterfalls through indigenous forest. At the Marloth Nature Reserve, you will see klipspringer, duiker, rhebok and leopard.

Bontebok Nature Reserve:

Not far from town is the Bontebok National Park, cradled between the Langeberg Mountains and the Breede River. Besides bontebok, the park is also home to zebra, red hartebeest and grey rhebok. Bird watchers should look out for secretary birds and fish eagles.

Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve

To the east is the Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve, an indigenous forest that can be explored on foot or on a mountain bike.

De Hoop Marine Park and Nature Reserve:

A day trip to the Indian Ocean in South Africa's most southerly nature reserve. Walk past 30 metre high sand dunes to wide unspoilt beaches and swim in sparkling clear rock pools. View Zebras, Bontebok and other game together with birdlife along the riverside.

Tradouw Pass to Montague:

An awe-inspiring Pass through to the Klein Karoo via the picturesque village of Suurbrak and on to the small spa town of Montague. Connect also to Ashton and the wine route to Worcester who's wines are world-famous, or pass Montague along a scenic road to Oudtshoorn and visit the Ostrich farms.

Cape Agulhas and Struis Bay:

An hour's drive away. See the most southerly point in Africa and swim in a tidal pool where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet.

Whale Watching

At various locations particularly at Witsand (70 kms) with its magnificent white sands.

Relax in the warm, recuperative waters of the natural spring at The Warmwaterberg Spa near Barrydale (with a glass of brandy from the Barrydale Wine Cellars) or visit the beautifully restored buildings and two churches of the mission station at Suurbraak.
